8 reviews for RG300 Retro Handheld Game Console with Open Source System Retro Game Console 16G + 32G TF Card Handheld Video Games 3 Inch IPS Screen Arcade Retro Portable Device Grey

  1. GB

This handheld console does exactly what I hoped it would. The game library is packed with classics, and everything runs smoothly. The screen is sharp, the controls feel solid, and the battery lasts long enough for a few solid sessions before needing a charge.

It’s not trying to be a high-end gaming system, and that’s the point. It’s fun, reliable, and brings back a lot of good memories. It’s compact enough to carry around, but still feels substantial in hand.

As pictured, on arrival, my RG300 wouldn’t make it past the boot screen. Note that the included version of RetroFW is 2.0, which, as of this writing, is very out of date.

The source of the problem was a corrupted TF card, which, upon my research, I discovered is not uncommon with these devices. Fortunately, that internal TF card is easy to remove and is located directly behind the battery. Note this is separate from the external TF card slot, and also, the plastic tab retaining the battery broke off easily during this process. However, this actually made accessing the area easier, and the main battery cover is enough to keep everything in place. Just don’t let that one break!

I taught myself how to flash a branded TF card with the current RetroFW version 2.3. The exact file was RetroFW_Y030XX067A, for those who are curious, and it brought the system back to life.

I can’t rate the preinstalled library, because the factory install never booted that far. However, with my fresh card replacement, I loaded in a few OPK files for the various supported console emulations, and then a handful of ROMs for each. Finally, the system was alive!

Overall, this RG300 is a nice unit, but it clearly deserves to lose a couple of stars for the lack of quality control with the TF card and the resultant hassle of getting it working. Assuming you are lucky enough to receive a unit with a proper TF card, great. For tinkerers, if you can manage the hassle, the system is actually a lot of fun to play. The pocket size and portability make it easy to bring along anywhere, allowing you to enjoy the simpler, arguably “better” times of retro gaming.

I’ve reviewed several retro handheld consoles from different companies, and I was excited to try this one because it has a removable battery, less buttons in the back and seemed like a solid, compact system. Unfortunately, this was the first time I’ve received a unit that was completely non-playable right out of the box.

Mine arrived without the 32GB memory card the description mentioned (but the included sheet doesn’t mention one, so not sure if that’s how they ship). Without that card, the device boots into a desktop-style menu with icons, but nothing can be launched or played. No games, no usable content, just a desktop looking interface. Because of that, I couldn’t test performance, controls, or anything else.

It may have been used (no screen protector, no memory card) or not packaged correctly before being sent to Amazon. Other handhelds I’ve purchased always arrived ready to play, even if the game library was small. This one wasn’t functional at all.

Really disappointed in this, and I’m glad I didn’t plan to give it as a gift. I expected at least a working unit with a memory card included, but without it, the console isn’t usable.

  4. biqa

This handheld is a fun little console for retro gaming. The screen looks clear and bright, the buttons feel responsive, and it’s lightweight and easy to carry around. It’s great for quick gaming sessions and brings back a lot of nostalgia. Overall, it’s a nice gift idea and a good option if you enjoy classic games.

  5. K. F.

This handheld game console fits perfectly in your hands and is light weight to hold. The menu system is hard to navigate through, but the games are fun to play. It offers a lot of games to play which will bring back a lot of fun memories from your childhood. The screen is bright, as good coloring, and good resolution. The system doesn’t always function right but if you’re patient, it can sort itself out. Your fingers with get worn out before the battery does.

  6. Amazon Customer

DO NOT BUY! I have ordered 3 of these in the last month, all 3 either died the same day I opened it or were dead on arrival. Not like battery dead, but it would turn on and just not work, the battery wouldn’t charge, the quality control stickers on all 3 said “2022” and you can tell these all were badly used. They are obviously selling them, getting the return and reselling the same broken unit. Awful company and awful product.

  7. biqa

The screen play is very small and hard to see, this arrived used, the card that was supposed to be included was missing and the battery overheats then the system shuts down and will not turn back on for a very long time. I ordered this for my husband for Christmas because he liked retro games. The plus is there are over 300 games on here but the quality of this product is not good at all. The instructions are written very small and are hard to read. I am returning and getting a replacement, hopefully that one works better than this one did.

A game console that sporadically works is worth 2-stars on a good day. Overall fit and finish is nice, its comfortable to hold, and appears to be well built. That said, mine has boot-up issues. It will sit on the load screen for hours, doing nothing but wasting electrons. Occasionally it will actually load, bit I would put the failure rate at 80%. No idea what is happening with it and I dont see any signs of damage fro drops or loose components, so I assume its got some inherent mobo/sw issues. After reading the other reviews I see I’m not alone in this problem. Be aware!
