This game is amazing if you enjoy rage quitting before even getting to the actual game!
In the vein of Grand Turismo this game makes you pass “license” style tests that are so unforgiving you’ll spend hours on them repeating the same 30 seconds of track before passing them/getting to race other bikes.
The controls are tanky, unforgivably so. The track boundaries are unforgivable too. Literally, one one hundredth of a millimeter off the course and you fail a test run.
The AI is impossibly mindless. I’m not sure if they’re coded to be overly aggressive or blind. Perhaps both. Veer left or right of the “suggested line”? 13 AI bikes slam into you at full speed with zero regard for brakes/moving out of the way. It’s as though they’re meant to stay on a specific line the entire track and aren’t capable of moving past that line/navigating things within that line. It’s pathetic.
The graphics are borderline fantastic, I’ll give it that. Everything from the bikes to textures to scenery to driver movements down to the fingers hitting the brake/clutch. Excellent visuals.
The sound is PS2 quality, at best. Most all bikes sound the same and sound overly digital. Not very realistic.
Music. Ugh. That is all.
I want to love this game but can’t do it and am returning it. A game shouldn’t make you re-evaluate your life choices and anger you to the degree this game does. There is no reward for the pain involved.

This is a great simulation of riding a street bike. This is not for the Mario cart crowd.

I really wish this company would not make this game so hard. I am still stuck with the first few races and just do not have the time to put in to it to try to meet the requirements to move on. this might be my next game to get traded.

This is the most accurate simulator since EA sports World Superbike 2001 for PC. You will need to put in time on this one for sure. Switch the throttle from the trigger to the joystick for a more accurate throttle and control.

“Road Rash 4”, I’m sorry, I meant to say Ride 4, does many things right, including 4K 60 fps gameplay on PS5 with super fast loading within 2 seconds or so.
A nice range of motorcycles including even some 300 cc 2 cylinder bikes like the Yamaha 300R. The Ninja 300R/400R is missing, and the Honda CBR 300R requires $5 to acquire which I’ll skip since the race track version is at least playable. Latest models include 2020 versions of some superbikes, and there are some nice free DLC bikes offered too. The controls are generally good and the camera angles are plentiful and nicely done, along with the graphics, detail and sound effects for the most part.
So why does Ride 4 earn the name Road Rash 4? Because Ride 4 promotes intentionally crashing into other bikes and receiving ZERO penalty for it. I can’t tell you how many times I was taking a corner and someone from behind slammed into my bike or pit moved my back tire so the bike would crash while they kept on going like no big deal. So you know what? I tested it out, and intentionally knocked over 7 racers so they crashed badly behind me and received no penalty at all, winning the race. That CONFIRMS without a doubt, that Milestone may be strict about going over the lines and being penalized for that, but knocking over any bike you want to win the race is perfectly acceptable in Road Rash 4, I mean Ride 4. If that was allowed in real life, people would be seriously injured at these speeds. Ridiculous this was allowed. It’s strange, because I never had this issue in Ride 2, which was much more reasonable in difficulty too.
These are absolutely the most awful things about this otherwise good racing game, with the exception of Milestone’s version of the word “very easy” actually meaning medium to hard difficulty, because the other racers are experts on the track even on very easy, and hit every single hard turn like experts that have studied the track for hours. Make one slow turn and they’re already on your tail passing you up. The Career mode is equally punishing even on very easy. And before you say I don’t know how to ride a bike, in real life I’ve been riding motorcycles for 20 years, and in video games, easily over 20 years.
But then remember, this game freely allows them to knock your bike off the track, so you’re free to intentionally knock them off their bikes too. Milestone allows it.
Honestly, that is awful, and yet somehow even with the updates, it’s still allowed in Ride 4. Thankfully this game is playable offline even though the timed races solo, ask about being online, which I decline to be able to continue offline. For certain tracks and bikes, you are required to buy them so those will ask you to connect online to do so, which I just exit out of.
Otherwise, Ride 4 does a great job on the bike detail, but customization is odd. There’s an editor mode that allows you to change the color of your bike to any color you want, but apparently it’s only available for online, so your dream bike is not possible in offline races it seems. You have to stick with the factory limited colors, with the exception of your rims and chain. Not great for customization.
What is great about Ride 4 is the day/night cycle and weather adjustments you can make. You can speed up time or slow it down, or just race at one time of day. Same with the weather.
For options, they are weak. You can’t adjust much compared to past games. 3 modes for your bike. A semi-realistic, realistic and extreme mode for how your bike handles. Semi mode, you can’t do wheelies if you wanted to.
Overall, Ride 4 drops the ball compared to prior Ride games, but at least gets the day/night cycle and PS5 aspects right. “Now go out there and smash up some other racers” should be Ride 4’s slogan. Not good.
For Ride 5, here’s hoping this is fixed so crashing into other bikers intentionally (or not) is not a common occurrence. Also hoping for a map where there is an open world to explore. That would be cool.
